San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the islands of Venice, lying east of the Giudecca and south of the main island group. It forms part of the San Marco sestiere. The Benedictine Monastery of San Giorgio was established in 982 and its monks drained the island's marshes. San Giorgio is now best known for the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by the great architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) and begun in 1566. It is now the headquarters of the Cini Foundation arts centre, known for its library and is also home to the Teatro Verde open-air theatre.

Beautiful pictures! What a nice way to share with people what only your eyes can see, and your third eye, the camera, captures your view of the world!

Absolutely wonderful photos your son has taken Sonia! Isn't it amazing that such large and beautiful buildings can be built on such a tiny island, and so close to the water?
What a feat!
I appreciate so much the education you give me by showing me other parts of our world.
Thank you!

Thanks for the invitation to this new site!

Beautiful photos of one of the nicest cities in the world! When I see these photos I have an immediate wish to return there! (Venice has so much to give, even outside the normal tourist places. It has a specific atmosphere and there is so much to see all over.)
